Throughout the planning phases of the Griffin Green project extensive community consultation was held with the Griffith Community and specifically with the residents of ‘Pioneer’ the LAHC, DCJ managed public housing estate that wraps around the project. Residents of this community were extremely vocal about the potential loss of key community facilities through this development. Specifically, the loss of the Alma Bamlett Community Centre and the basketball court. The Community Centre has been essential for Aboriginal families and the provision of services to this community, the basketball court is a critical piece of social infrastructure for young people in the community who use this as a safe space to interact, and as the only recreational space in the suburb.
A commitment was made by Argyle Housing and the Griffith City Council through the consultation phase to replace the community center and the basketball court. These developments are cornerstone projects in the place making for the broader Griffin Green development precinct.
Argyle Housing have committed $1.119m towards the construction of the Community Hub.
The hub will connect with the local service network providing wrap around services for community partnership with Council and wellbeing initiatives. The community space will be made available for use/hire for community events, and this will be managed through the Griffith Administration Officer onsite.
