Argyle’s final thoughts on NAIDOC week this year are from our Chief Executive Officer, Chris Bratchford.

Chris and Michele Wagga April2013

When asked what does NAIDOC week mean to you? Chris replies…

“It means recognition of, and celebration of, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders as the first Australians. For many years Australian legislation did not recognise Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders as Australian citizens and Australian history did not recognise them as the original owners of the land. NAIDOC week is a celebration that helps address this.  To Argyle, as a Community Housing Provider, NAIDOC week provides an opportunity to better understand the issues facing a key client group”.

Talking about our effort this year to better our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Islander people, Chris explained “Argyle has initiated and substantially progressed consultations to establish a Reconciliation Action Plan. Argyle also continues to conduct, for its staff, regular cultural awareness training facilitated by Aboriginal trainers. We commit to continue to working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander communities to improve access to Argyle services”.

Chris also shared a story of inspiration about a high profile Indigenous man, Adam Goodes of the Sydney Swans. “Adam Goodes’ response to racial taunts showed us all how we should behave toward one to another”.

As we share our final thoughts on NAIDOC week this year, we end on a positive note reflecting on the strength of character demonstrated by Adam Goodes’ in his actions.
