Rachel joined Argyle Housing in December 2018 as a Maintenance Administration Officer and then joined the Access & Allocations Team in February 2021. She was surprised at how much she had to learn on housing pathways, allocating properties and assessing new social housing applications – a role, she was very new too, but she learnt quickly and has not stopped building her knowledge base since.

Rachel has been involved in the changes in July 2022 when Access and Allocations became the Housing Access Team or HAT team which included significant changes to her role, staffing and workload.

Rachel is always willing to assist other team members, whenever and wherever she can. She is the first to volunteer, to help remote teams when they are short staffed, be it Wagga, Griffith or in the ACT.

He was promoted as an accountant in April 2020, and as a senior accountant in August 2022. Mark has gradually taken on additional leadership responsibilities during the time when key officers in finance have left the organisation, in the last year. Mark continues to take on additional challenges of being a more business-minded professional by getting more involved in business case modelling in support of funding requests and reporting requirements.

Mark has always maintained his cool, calm, and collected approach in answering queries. He continues to exhibit professionalism in addressing all manner of finance matters, and in managing relationships with our partners with a demonstrated commitment to the success of Argyle Housing.

Renu is the finance team’s proverbial Swiss-army-knife, having rotated into different functions within the organisation. She started her journey with Argyle Housing in January 2018, primarily working on daily receipting and rent adjustments. After returning from maternity leave in May 2022, she has moved into the rent review space where she helped in the financial year-end review of tenancies. In July of the same year, armed with the knowledge gained from her stint in operations, she re-joined the finance team, working with the payroll function. She was instrumental in migrating our credit card administration system to pro-master, a mobile corporate expenditure application enabling the card users in Argyle Housing to do end-to-end processing on their respective mobile devices.

Her calm demeanor and sense of humour has endeared Renu to our staff, as she patiently addresses queries on payroll and credit card administration. Renu is currently on her parental leave, and we are looking forward to her expected to return in May 2024

Jenny Chapman

Jenny Chapman’s heart beats for the community.

An Argyle Housing employee, Jenny has turned her volunteer hours into a mission of hope, creating nutritious and heartwarming meals for the vulnerable with Meals on Wheels Griffith. Her dedication is remarkable, with 350 meals made so far and a goal of reaching 700. This initiative isn’t just about numbers, it’s about the lives she’s touching, the smiles she’s bringing, and the difference she’s making.

The journey began with a single meal. Today, Jenny provides assistance to two Argyle Housing Clients directly. This includes an elderly gentleman on the waitlist, who due to steep private rent rates, was unable to afford food. A hamper filled with nutritious meals now reaches him once a week, a gesture of kindness that speaks volumes about Jenny’s dedication.

With her goal of preparing 700 meals, Jenny is not just limiting her initiative to Hampers of Hope. She aims to extend support to the Salvation Army’s Men’s refuge, broadening the horizon of her mission. The goal is to ensure no one in the community goes hungry, and everyone is cared for.

Jenny’s commitment is reflected in her meticulous planning. She has set up a large freezer at home, enabling her to cook during the week, relieving the pressure of weekend cooking. Additionally, she aspires to set up a freezer in the Griffith office, ensuring the meals are accessible for Clients when needed.

Every week, Jenny prepares one or two dishes every night, a mix of savory and sweet meals. These are then carefully packaged, frozen, and delivered to Hampers of Hope and Meals on Wheels the following week. The process isn’t without its fun elements, with a recent late-night kitchen trial leading to a hilarious session of toffee apple making.

Her dishes are diverse, catering to various tastes and preferences. From Spaghetti Bolognese, Savory Mince, Beef Casserole with Dumplings, Tuna Bake, Potato Bake, Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake among others, to sweet surprises like Chocolate Crackles, Honey Joys, Mars Bar Slice, and Caramel Fudge, each meal is prepared with love and passion.

Jenny’s efforts have been generously supported by Axichem, who have donated containers, and Broome’s, who have contributed vegetables. These donations have further propelled her mission, enabling her to create an array of delicious dishes.

As she explored various recipes, Jenny faced the challenge of creating budget-friendly meals without repeating dishes. She wants to offer dishes that Clients may not be able to afford, making each meal a special experience. As luck would have it, she came across a 1923 Radiation Cookbook, a valuable heirloom from her great grandmother. The book, published for use with the New World Gas cooker, offers a variety of vintage recipes, adding an old-world touch to Jenny’s modern-day mission.

Jenny’s volunteer work provides a shining example of community service. Her dedication, passion, and commitment to serving others exemplify the spirit of Meals on Wheels – a mission fueled by love, hope, and the shared belief that no one should go hungry.

Karen Zelinsky

Karen joined the Argyle Housing team back in July 2023 as our Client Support Specialist, at our Market St Lodge, in Goulburn.

Since starting at Argyle Housing, Karen has implemented several regular initiatives to improve the quality and comfort of our residents.

The Regular Breakfast program gives residents the opportunity to assist in preparing breakfast for the Lodge. This has been an increasingly popular program – especially when pancakes are on the menu.

Residents Meetings are now in place and held the first Friday of each month. These meetings empower residents and enhances their sense of ownership and belonging within their home community.  It also fosters a collaborative spirit, leading to decisions that cater to the collective needs and desires of the group, ultimately fostering a more harmonious and enjoyable living environment.

And regular Crafting Activities provide a sense of accomplishment for residents and a boost of confidence with learning a new skill.

Karen also regularly collects donated food products from Coles Secondbite and C3 Care Southern Highlands & Tablelands such as bread, tinned foods, snacks, and other delicious treats to share with the residents at Market Street.

Along with this, Karen prepares bulk toasted sandwiches for residents to re-heat when they need something quick to eat. She also fills the freezer up with nutritious wholesome pre-made meals and at least once a fortnight hosts a free communal lunch where residents can come together and talk.

“We are always busy, but my heart is for people, and I hope that these gestures can go some way to improve the lives of the residents.”

But it doesn’t end there. Karen has created welcome kits for new occupants.  These kits contain essential items like toothbrushes, deodorant, and personal hygiene products.

During the colder months, she also acquired coats and warm clothing which she shared with the residents.  Through her connection with Usshers Land Community Pantry, she secured clean blankets, bed linen, pillows and towels for the Market Street rooms.

Giving back to community and volunteering has always been in Karen’s nature.

Outside of Argyle Housing, Karen is an appointed Official Community Visitor for the Minister of Families, Communities and Disability Services, and an Official Visitor for the Minister of Mental Health.

Karen and her husband also lend a helping hand at C3 Cares – Southern Highlands Christian Community Centre, where they have built volunteering connections across the Southern Highlands and Tableland regions.

“My husband and I prepare meals which are given out free to anyone in need.  We cook an average of 150 meals per week. We also provide meals and other goods to other charities to help them to get food out to their connections.” said Karen.

Karen embodies our ethos around building better communities. Her positivity and energy have given residents at the lodge a sense of connection, community, and joy, turning Market Street from a lodge and into a place they can call home.

Claymore Mother’s Day Expo

Argyle Housing is pleased to report on our recent presence at the Claymore Mother’s Day Expo. Despite not having a significant turnout, the event was largely successful and offered valuable opportunities for engagement and the establishment of fresh network connections.

As a stallholder at the expo, Argyle Housing had the chance to interact with attendees directly, answering their queries and providing clarity about our mission and services. We received a number of visits to our stall from individuals expressing interest in our work and asking about our role within the community. These interactions were a testament to the ongoing interest in and support for Argyle Housing in our service areas.

Moreover, the expo served as a platform for us to make new network connections, further expanding our community reach and potential partnerships. These connections are invaluable in our work towards building inclusive, respectful, and vibrant communities.

Despite the lower turnout, Argyle Housing’s participation in the Claymore Mother’s Day Expo was a positive experience. It offered the opportunity to engage, educate, and extend our network, all of which are essential components in our ongoing mission. We look forward to participating in future events and engaging with our community in diverse and meaningful ways.

Tolland tidy your yard initiative

Earlier this year, Argyle Housing’s dedicated staff, Kristy and Eric, participated in the “Tidy Your Yard” initiative in the suburb of Tolland, located in Wagga Wagga. This program encouraged residents to improve their garden areas, promoting neighbourhood cleanliness and environmental responsibility. The involvement of Kristy and Eric was instrumental in the successful implementation of the program, providing hands-on assistance and expert advice to participants.

Funded by LAHC and organised by the Wagga Wagga DCJ office and City of Wagga Wagga Council, the Tolland Community Clean Up event was a showcase example of multi-agency collaboration. Over 50 volunteers from DCJ Housing, Birribee Housing, Argyle Housing, City of Wagga Wagga Council, Juvenile Justice, Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation, Mission Australia, Anglicare, Smallmon Brothers Waste and Recycling, Alliance Supports, St Vincent de Paul and Redhill Primary School all worked together to help with waste collection.

Volunteers were tasked with door knocking, driving around the estate to load rubbish in and out of trailers, filling skip bins and cleaning up the local park, and were later rewarded with a well-earned BBQ lunch to thank them for their efforts.

The event resulted in a total of 24 truck movements emptying skip bins into the Council waste facility. This included the removal of 31 mattresses, 3 fridges and 51 tonnes of waste.

Special thanks to Brianna Manuatu from DCJ Housing in Wagga Wagga who was instrumental in ensuring the event was a complete success, and to all the local volunteers from each respective agency who enthusiastically got their hands dirty to offer support on the day.

These Argyle Housing representatives worked closely with community members, helping them understand the importance of maintaining tidy yards and providing practical tips for yard care. Their efforts not only resulted in visually appealing neighbourhoods but also fostered a sense of community pride and unity. Furthermore, their involvement marked yet another example of Argyle Housing’s commitment to community development and engagement. The “Tidy Your Yard” initiative, bolstered by the active participation of Kristy and Eric, affirmed Argyle Housing’s dedication to fostering vibrant, clean, and cohesive communities.

Argyle Housing extends hearty congratulations to our esteemed staff members and Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) NSW cadets, Tamara and Maddison, on their remarkable achievement of graduating from the CHIA NSW Cadetship Program!

This event took place on Thursday, 10 August, graced by the presence of The Hon Rose Jackson MLC, Minister for Water, Housing, and Homelessness, who served as the guest speaker during the graduation ceremony.

The CHIA NSW Cadetship Program, made possible through the support of the NSW Government, is a pioneering initiative offering new training opportunities linked to careers in the community housing sector. We eagerly anticipate their continued growth and development in this industry, as they leverage their newly acquired skills and knowledge to make meaningful contributions to the community. Well done, Tamara and Maddison! Your accomplishment sets a commendable precedent for future cadets of this program.

To both of you, I am incredibly proud to see you succeed, graduate, and continue embodying the Argyle Values. It was an honor to be there at the beginning of your journey, pushing you to be the best versions of yourselves.

In my experience as a teacher, you were truly the best and most memorable students. I appreciate your humility and gratitude for my efforts. I cannot contain my excitement to see what you will achieve personally and professionally in the future!

This gathering, beyond being a celebration, facilitated meaningful discussions and the sharing of ideas on issues concerning women. The camaraderie and shared vision at this event underscored the importance of unity and collective action in the pursuit of gender equality.

Launch of Market Street Lodge Griffith

Argyle Housing has taken a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in Goulburn with the relaunch of Market Street Lodge.

The lodge, once dormant, has been refurbished to provide secure, clean, and warm housing for some of Goulburn’s most vulnerable residents.

The project’s completion marks a crucial milestone in Argyle Housing’s commitment to tackle housing insecurity and homelessness in the region. The lodge, equipped with modern facilities, offers not just shelter but a place of comfort and safety for those who need it most. The accommodation offers single rooms catering to a diverse demographic of the community in need. Each room is furnished to foster a sense of independence while still promoting a sense of community among the residents.

Beyond the physical aspects, the refurbished Market Street Lodge embodies a safe haven that exudes warmth, stability, and dignity. Residents are assured of a supportive environment where their needs are prioritised, and their well-being is the central focus.

The launch event was marked by a sense of positivity and hope, reflecting Argyle Housing’s aspiration to make a tangible difference in the community. The participants, including local community members and key stakeholders, acknowledged the significant role that such initiatives play in mitigating homelessness and promoting societal inclusivity.

The reopening of Market Street Lodge in Goulburn is a testament to Argyle Housing’s steadfast commitment to community well-being. It underscores Argyle Housing’s mission to create inclusive, respectful, and vibrant communities that cater to everyone, including the most vulnerable. This project sets a remarkable precedent for future initiatives, reinforcing the belief that every individual deserves a safe and secure place to call home.

Some of the local services include Mission Australia, Anglicare, DCJ Housing, St Vincent De Paul, Mental Health and Flourish Mental Health.

The then Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said this is a great example of what can be achieved when community housing providers and business owners work hand in hand.

“This renovated housing complex offers secure accommodation as well as access to wraparound support services to people with complex and high needs who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness in Goulburn,” Mrs. Maclaren-Jones said.

Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the Lodge improved outcomes for people with barriers to long-term housing.

Argyle Housing CEO Carolyn Doherty said Argyle Housing commenced management of the complex in 2022.

“Argyle Housing welcomed the opportunity to re-introduce this much needed accommodation to the men and women of Goulburn who are looking for a safe place to stay and the opportunity to work with Argyle Housing and support services to secure long term housing,” Ms. Doherty said.

“The facilities have been refurbished and Argyle Housing now has a permanent office within the building.

“This will ensure that we can take referrals for accommodation and also ensure that all clients are supported to achieve their housing goals.”

Meals on Wheels

Argyle Housing colleagues Scott, Jennifer, and Eve had the immense pleasure of spending their morning with the dedicated team at Meals on Wheels – Griffith. This non-profit organisation truly epitomises the spirit of community service as they tirelessly work to provide nourishing meals for those in need. Our hearts were filled with joy and admiration as we saw an incredible display of generosity from local businesses donating fresh food, snacks, and even beautiful flowers.

In a bid to contribute to this noble cause and due to the cancelled launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in Griffith due to inclement weather, we donated the 72 lunch boxes from the launch that were filled with an assortment of delicious Indigenous foods to Meals on Wheels. The Argyle Housing RAP is a commitment to bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. We believe food is a powerful tool to bring people together, break down barriers and create understanding, respect and inclusion for diverse cultures.

All credit for the delightful lunch boxes go to the talented Marrambidya Dance Group. Their ability to create something so delicious and culturally rich left us in awe. Their lunch boxes were not just meals, but a celebration of our country’s Indigenous heritage.

In addition, the dedication of Meals on Wheels Griffith to their mission was truly inspiring. Their unrelenting efforts to provide wholesome meals to individuals who may otherwise go without is a testament to their deep commitment to the community.

This experience has deeply ingrained in us the value of community spirit, the importance of cultural appreciation, and the power of a simple meal in bringing smiles on people’s faces. Our encounter with Meals on Wheels – Griffith and the Marrambidya Dance Group was a humbling and enriching experience that we will always hold close to our hearts.

In conclusion, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Meals on Wheels Griffith and the Marrambidya Dance Group for providing us with this unforgettable experience. We look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate and contribute to our wonderful community.

National Sorry Day

Argyle Housing, an advocate for community well-being and inclusivity, recently marked its presence at the National Sorry Day event held at Mount Annan Botanical Garden. Members from our Housing Access Specialist, Client Services and Rent Services teams had the opportunity to engage with and support our local community. This included fruitful interactions with important regional organisations such as the local Aboriginal Land Council, Department of Communities and Justice, Southwest Sydney Aboriginal Health, Uniting, Anglicare, and Wellways.

Our attendance at such events reinforces our commitment towards community inclusivity and collaboration. It allows us to connect with organisations that run essential programs for the community, such as Southwest Sydney Local Aboriginal District (SWSLAD) Aboriginal health. They run a pivotal program focusing on supporting Indigenous individuals struggling with drug-related issues.

Events like the National Sorry Day offer us an invaluable platform to better understand the needs of our community and identify potential avenues for cooperation that can benefit our clients. We are particularly excited about the prospect of collaborating more closely with these critical support structures. Our aim is to set up workshops and support programs in conjunction with these organisations. This will ensure that our shared clients receive the comprehensive support they need.

Through these collaborative efforts, Argyle Housing continues to uphold its mission of creating inclusive, respectful, and vibrant communities, looking forward to strengthening these partnerships in the future for the betterment of our mutual clients.

Wear it Yellow Day

On Friday 2nd June, our local Southwest Sydney office of Argyle Housing participated in the ‘Wear it Yellow’ event, marking yet another successful community and fundraising initiative in their busy calendar. The team was vibrant in yellow, showcasing their unwavering support for Children’s Ground, a remarkable First Nations non-profit organisation.

The Argyle Housing team’s participation in ‘Wear it Yellow’ day is a testament to their ongoing commitment to community engagement and support for organisations that make significant impacts in the community.

Their choice to support Children’s Ground further underlines their dedication to fostering inclusivity, respect, and vibrant communities. This event serves as a bright reminder of Argyle Housing’s robust community spirit, paving the way for more such participatory events in the future.

Golfing Day for Domestic Violence

n the early morning of 23rd February, Argyle Housing’s executives, managers, and staff gathered at the Moss Vale Golf Course to participate in the Southern Highlands Golfing Day. This event was not merely a day of sport but bore a greater purpose — raising much-needed funds for the local Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Service.

The day was marked by a spirit of camaraderie and solidarity, as the Argyle Housing team picked up their clubs not for competition, but for a cause. Despite the early Sunday timing, the energy on the course was palpable, with every successful putt or drive celebrated as a contribution towards the fight against domestic violence.

The Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Service, which offers vital support and resources to those affected by domestic violence in our community, was the beneficiary of the day’s efforts. The funds raised through the golfing event will aid in the continuation of their essential services, providing hope and assistance to those most in need.

Reflecting on the day, it was more than just a fundraising event; it was a testament to Argyle Housing’s commitment to supporting local community services. By standing shoulder-to-shoulder with organisations like the Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Service, Argyle Housing continues to reinforce its mission of creating inclusive, respectful, and vibrant communities. The Southern Highlands Golfing Day served as another instance of this commitment in action, marking a successful day of sport, solidarity, and support for a vital cause.

Domestic Violence Walk

On November 2, a group of dedicated staff from Argyle Housing gathered before work at the Don Bradman Oval in Bowral to participate in the Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Forum’s “DV Wear Orange Walk”.

This event was organised with the purpose of raising awareness about domestic violence within the Southern Highlands community.

The Argyle Housing staff members, donned in vibrant orange attire, demonstrated the solidarity and commitment of Argyle Housing to stand against domestic violence. As they walked around the oval, their presence was a powerful symbol of the collective stand against domestic abuse and the necessity for a safer community.

The Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Forum has long been a beacon for those affected by such violence in the community, offering vital support and resources. Their ‘DV Wear Orange Walk’ was a successful endeavor in its mission to highlight the importance of this issue and foster a greater understanding within the community.

Argyle Housing’s participation in the walk adds to their track record of community engagement and their dedication to supporting critical services in the Southern Highlands. This event underscored their ongoing commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and respectful community spaces. It was a visible testament to their belief that every individual deserves to live free from fear and domestic violence. The ‘DV Wear Orange Walk’ served as a powerful reminder of Argyle Housing’s unwavering support for essential causes, marking another day of solidarity and advocacy for a safer community.

Client Appreciation

Our Argyle Housing staff are committed to providing empathetic and personalised service to our Clients, and a recent interaction emphasises this commitment. Our staff member Nicole received heartfelt appreciation from a family currently facing a crisis involving health problems and end-of-life care. The daughter of our head Client, who is managing the care of both her elderly family members, expressed her gratitude through the delivery of a beautiful bunch of flowers.

Her mother had been placed in palliative care due to a blood infection that has halted cancer treatment. Her uncle, aged 78, moved from interstate in mid-December to care for his ailing sister. With an impending heart valve surgery scheduled for February 2023, and a lengthy recovery period, he raised concerns about the stability of his housing needs, especially in the event of the head Client’s passing.

In this challenging situation, the community at the complex had shown remarkable solidarity. Fellow Clients come forward to assist with his recovery plan, demonstrating the spirit of community support that defines this housing complex.

Our staff member was able to alleviate the family’s distress by confirming a three-month tenancy in the event of the head Client’s unexpected passing, following our Succession Policy. Furthermore, Nicole advocated for the succession of the tenancy to him, as he meets the social housing criteria. She firmly believes in the injustice of the potential homelessness of a 78-year-old individual grappling with medical issues and the likely loss of an immediate family member.

Both family members expressed profound gratitude for the assistance, which alleviated their concerns about homelessness and clarified the process of tenancy succession. As pledged, our Argyle Housing staff member has continued to handle the necessary paperwork and procedures, aiming to make the transition as smooth as possible for them and offer the Client a permanent housing solution. This situation underscores our ongoing commitment to our Clients and the difference we strive to make in their lives, particularly during times of crisis.

CEO Sleepout

Argyle Housing continues to demonstrate its commitment to ending homelessness, with a team of five who participated in the 2023 CEO Sleepout in Canberra on Thursday, June 22nd.

This event is a clear example of Argyle Housing actively contributing to the eradication of homelessness within the communities we serve, in collaboration with local support partners.

The team, composed of Tasi, Sudha, Milan, Carolyn and Cherie, who be bravely spent a night sleeping outdoors in a bid to understand the harsh realities that their Clients face daily.

It is a powerful act of empathy, reflecting our organisation’s deep-rooted passion for addressing homelessness and rough sleeping. Carolyn Doherty, Argyle Housing’s CEO, is no stranger to such events, having previously represented the organisation and successfully raised funds at the St Vincent De Paul 2022 CEO Sleepout.

Argyle Housing’s participation in the 2023 CEO Sleepout is a testament to our mission of providing not just houses, but homes. The experience has undoubtedly brought the team closer to the lived experiences of their Clients, thus further enhancing their services towards those affected by homelessness.  It is a firm reminder that our efforts extend beyond mere provision of shelter, seeping into advocacy, awareness campaigns, and active commitment to improve the lives of our Clients. The Sleepout is a significant step in their ongoing battle against homelessness, and a beacon of hope for our community.

RAP Launch

Argyle Housing is honoured to work on lands of the Dharawal, Gundungurra, Ngunnawal, Ngambi, Wiradjuri and Waveroo peoples. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the custodians of the lands on which we serve our communities.

We acknowledge that the land is, was and always will be Aboriginal land. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people celebrating their strength, history, and culture. We are committed to our reconciliation journey, because at its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. A better understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures develops an enriched appreciation of Australia’s cultural heritage and will lead to reconciliation. This is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of our Australian identity.

We’d like to welcome each of you to this exciting milestone, the launch of Argyle Housing’s Innovate: Reconciliation Action Plan March 2023 – March 2025. Today Argyle Housing is hosting five pop up events across our different locations to represent our One Argyle approach to Reconciliation. One Argyle is our people, Clients, community, and each of our offices including our regional NSW offices. The local areas where we work are each so unique and we recognise the importance of developing meaningful relationships within each one to build strong, prosperous, and inclusive communities.

As such, our CEO Carolyn Doherty is in Wagga today and so we apologise she is not able to be here speaking to you today. As our number one RAP Champion we do want to share this message from her:

“As a Community Housing Provider Argyle Housing has a duty to ensure that the barriers to securing and maintaining housing are removed for all people. We share a responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are overrepresented in all areas of community services including social housing, and who face significantly greater barriers to access than others in need of housing.

We have made a strong commitment in this RAP that focuses on a shared journey towards healing. One that challenges us to be curious and courageous, to listen, to learn, to sit with uncomfortable truths while we as an organisation, as individuals and as a society become part of a movement of the Australian people for a better future.”

So, what is a Reconciliation Action Plan… and why have we developed and begun to implement this in our organisation?

The development of our Innovate: Reconciliation Action Plan allows us to recognise and build on our current relationships, to further demonstrate our respect for First Nations Peoples, history and culture in all aspects of our business. It also provides an aspirational and innovative framework of measurable goals and achievable actions to guide our journey of reconciliation and recognition. We believe that by being proactive and intentional about our efforts towards reconciliation, we can help achieve greater understanding, respect, and equality within our organisation and the broader community.

As an organisation we have developed this unique vision for reconciliation which we’d like to share with you all. “Our Vision for Reconciliation is the elimination of housing inequity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will work alongside First Nations Peoples to build communities, spaces, and homes. We do this by creating a foundation for opportunity through delivering culturally appropriate housing, providing pathways for employment, education, and wellbeing. We believe that Reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility, and we commit to the celebration of our shared histories, cultures and diversity through mutual respect and empowering self-determination.”

Argyle Housing’s reconciliation journey began 10 years ago. Our Reflect RAP in 2014 was a starting point for key learnings in developing this Innovate RAP. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the ones who have supported, educated, immersed, facilitated, encouraged, collaborated, partnered, and dreamed with us so far and invite the opportunity to develop these meaningful relationships moving forward.

The Riverina Murray Regional Alliance has been a key support and we have appreciated their willingness to work closely with us in the interests of maximising our collective knowledge to support First Nations Peoples and deliver successful outcomes.

Thank you to Birribee Housing who we work with on an operational level assisting each other to provide quality services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tenants. We are delighted to be working with Birribee Housing on the Tolland Estate Renewal Project as the Argyle Consortium which comprises Argyle Housing, Birribee Housing and BlueCHP. We have also had an ongoing relationship with The Griffith Aboriginal Land Council and are grateful for the ongoing engagement and consultation to produce successful outcomes for the Griffith Community and contribute to fostering a vibrant aboriginal community with positive links and opportunities for enhancing the Aboriginal heritage and culture of Griffith.

Recently, Argyle Housing was joined to the Memorandum of Understanding between The Community Housing Industry Association NSW (CHIA NSW), participating community housing providers, the Aboriginal Resource Unit (ARU) and Aboriginal Tenant Advice and Advocacy Services across NSW (ATAAS) to work alongside each other collaboratively to deliver safe, secure, and affordable housing and wrap around support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This is an exciting milestone.

So, what’s next? Our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan runs for 2 years. Following this launch we will then be creating localised action plans in collaboration with key First Nations peoples and organisations in our local communities. This will be a contextualised approach in which we can really gain a deeper understanding of our sphere of influence within each location we work and look to expand to in the future.

As part of our RAP Launch, we also proudly present “Journey,” our reconciliation artwork by Bindi Bindi Art. This artwork visually represents Argyle Housing, its people, community, regional offices, and clients, reflecting our vision for reconciliation. Created by artists Chloe Eastwood and Tay-la Shearley, “Journey” draws inspiration from our core values of Opportunity, Respect, Inclusive, and Accountability. Each value is depicted in a different design and colour, highlighting their significance in the work we do.

To view the artwork, please refer to pages 6 and 7 of the RAP booklets. “Journey” tells a story of inclusion, connection with Aboriginal culture, and community engagement. It symbolizes coming together, fostering a sense of belonging, and advocating for better futures for the communities we serve.

Argyle Housing believes in the collective responsibility of investing, building, and sustaining relationships with First Nations Peoples. We are committed to fostering relationships, valuing shared histories, cultures, and diversity. By celebrating our shared histories, we promote a culture of mutual respect, curiosity, shared resources, and understanding of everyone’s unique perspective and journey.

Thank you for joining us on this Reconciliation Journey.

R U OK DAY

The R U OK Day lunch was a resounding success for the staff of Argyle Housing.

Teams from all our regional offices congregated in a convivial atmosphere to not only enjoy lunch but engage in a meaningful dialogue with each other. The event served as a platform for them to discuss their wellness, share experiences, and create stronger bonds.

The luncheon was marked by a sense of camaraderie. It was heart-warming to witness the conversations, ranging from casual banter to deep discussions about personal experiences and challenges. The initiative was intended to reach out to colleagues, check on their wellbeing, and encourage open communication within the workplace. The event certainly delivered on its promise, fostering a sense of community and compassion among our crew.

This lunch underscored the importance of mental health and showed that Argyle Housing is committed to creating a supportive environment. It was an affirmation that it’s okay to talk about our struggles and emphasised the power of asking, “R U OK”. The event symbolised a step forward in our commitment to prioritising employee wellbeing and mental health. It reinforced that at Argyle Housing, we’re not just colleagues; we’re a support network for each other.

Gabby Hopping PowerHousing Australia Raising Star Award

Gabby Hopping reports on her award.

At the PowerHousing Awards 2022, I was awarded Highly Commended along with two other nominees in the Rising Star Award and Scholarship Immersion award category. This was a great honour after working in the industry for six months and being recognised as “an up-and-coming staff member who is not currently part of the Executive or Management team, but who has demonstrated potential through their work to be a leader in the organisation or sector.”

PowerHousing Australia facilitates a national network of 38 growth and Tier 1 regulated Community Housing Providers (CHPs) who develop and manage affordable housing across Australia. They are also the Australian member of the International Housing Partnership, which brings together housing organisations across the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.

Receiving this nomination for the Rising Star Award has allowed me to be a part of the Emerging Leaders and Rising Stars PowerHousing group which provides a context for collaboration with my colleagues across the sector. I have met so many different young, up and coming leaders over the last 6-8months and we have been able to share ideas, stories, advice and build a lasting relationship with one another. The program also features group meetings 4 times a year with guest speakers and opportunities for CEO mentoring from CHP CEOs across Australia.

An opportunity came up at the beginning of this year (2023) to all Scholarship recipients of the 2022 awards to go to Hobart on a Scholarship Immersion trip. As soon as I found out I was very excited and couldn’t wait to have the conversation with my manager and CEO to organise to go. They were right on it and said of course you cannot miss out on this opportunity!

So, off I went on the 2nd May 2023, after two trains, a flight and a bus I arrived at our accommodation that night excited out of my skin to be in Hobart (I had never been to Tasmania before). Over the three days of being in Tasmania we got to know one another as a group, including representatives from nine different Community Housing Providers across Australia, the CEO of PowerHousing Australia Nicholas Proud, CEO mentors who were CEO of Women’s Housing Company Debbie Georgopoulos and CEO BlueCHP Charles Northcote. Early on we established important trip objectives of learning how to influence decision making, understanding the housing system in Tasmania and learning to be purposeful about our careers.

Our itinerary was jam packed with every meeting and site visit a success as we built confidence in speaking with different stakeholders across the industry and learnt about what makes up the Tasmanian Housing System. We met with Kim Bomford from Housing Choices Australia, had dinner with ex-senator Doug Cameron with a very interesting dinner conversation on the history of politics around housing in Tasmania. We met with Chair of the Board Michele Adair and CEO Eleri Morgan-Thomas from Homes Tasmania which is a newly formed advisory body to the Tasmanian government with the objective to build more homes with some inspirational targets.

One of my favourite visits was to Centrecare Evolve Housing. I found this so interesting the way that this organisation is set up and their innovation within the construction space. I was very impressed with what they have done and inspired by their work. They showed us some amazing videos of their projects featuring unique partnerships. Branching from Centrecare Evolve Housing is also the Build Up Tassie Program, which works with construction partners one of these being St Joseph affordable homes which is their own social enterprise construction arm. It is a wholistic approach to construction especially being able to provide apprentices with life skills and resources to improve their wellbeing. We experienced a couple site visits to see the apprentices from Build Up Tassie at work and see what they have been building. We were also honoured to be invited to their industry breakfast where they had all of their apprentices there to network with the different trades within the construction arm and celebrate the community project, they had been working on with the Presentation Sisters of Tasmania.

Towards the end of the trip, we met with Tasmanian Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing Guy Barnett and heard his thoughts and plans for the immediate and future of housing in Tasmania. We also met with the leader of the opposition Rebecca White at Parliament House. Rebecca was very inspirational, sharing her journey in her career and the balance of work and life while being a political leader. Left us with many messages that will help no doubt each of us in our careers moving forward.

Lastly, we met with Federal Minister for Housing Julie Collins who was also so welcoming and encouraging towards us as up and coming leaders. We discussed both issues within the housing industry as well as challenges that she faces and has faced as a leader, which I learnt so much from.

The trip was a highlight in my career so far, it was such a wonderful opportunity to experience a broader understanding of our industry outside of the everyday sphere of our workplaces and to be inspired by leaders from across the nation within the sector. There has been so much value from being a part of this program so far and I am so thankful for this experience. I really hope these groups continue to grow and expand so that all my colleagues, particularly the younger ones, have the opportunity to be a part of a larger network than just their organization. We learn so much from one another and really are stronger working together and sharing knowledge and resources in order to get more beneficial outcomes for all of the communities, tenants, residents and Clients that we serve.
