Rick Kahn

A Journey of Resilience and Community

The Story of Rick Khan

Rick Khan’s life is a powerful testament to resilience, community, and the transformative power of art. His journey, marked by both challenges and triumphs, has been shaped by the unwavering support of organisations like Argyle Housing, the Gundungurra Aboriginal Land Council, and the kindness of individuals such as former Argyle Housing CEO, Wendy Middleton.

Rick’s early housing experiences in Sydney were challenging, marked by discrimination and harassment tied to his Aboriginal heritage. However, with the support of his doctor, a counsellor, and a neighbour, he applied for housing through Argyle Housing. A young staff member named Caitlin provided the support Rick needed, and he fondly recalls how the organisation has continued to assist him. “They’ve just been brilliant, and ever since, they’ve really looked after me,” Rick shared.

When Rick moved to his new home in the Southern Highlands, he found a sense of peace and community that had long been missing. He took great pride in maintaining his home, making improvements to the property, and contributing to the safety and beauty of his neighbourhood. His efforts to create a welcoming environment were driven by a desire to positively impact his surroundings.

Rick’s work with the Gundungurra Aboriginal Land Council has been another significant part of his journey. He focused on preserving the cultural heritage of the Gundungurra people, fostering pride and unity within the community. His leadership and dedication have been key in shaping the council’s vision for the future.

The painting now hangs proudly in the Bowral Argyle Housing Front Office, where it is on display for all to see.

Art has always been central to Rick’s life. His creative talents have earned him recognition, including third place in an Australasian art competition. His artworks, often inspired by his Aboriginal heritage, have been showcased in New York and various galleries. For Rick, art is not only personal expression but also a way to connect with others and share his culture.

Despite facing serious health challenges, including a cancer diagnosis, Rick remained resilient. The Genesis Cancer Care team in Campbelltown provided not only medical treatment but also emotional support. “They treated you like a real person, not just a patient,” Rick said, reflecting on the care that helped him through difficult times.

Two years ago, Rick found himself at a low point, but support from Anthony King at Community Links, along with others like Natalie, helped him regain his footing. The community’s support proved invaluable in his recovery, offering the encouragement he needed to continue his journey.

Rick’s philosophy of giving back to the community is central to his life. He became involved with the Gundungurra Aboriginal Centre, where his legal and political expertise proved invaluable in addressing council issues. Rick also envisioned a partnership with Argyle Housing to create inclusive community spaces, collaborating with groups like Murra Mia to support housing initiatives for First Nations people.

Looking to the future, Rick envisions the creation of a Centre for Excellence in the Southern Highlands, similar to Kimberwali in Sydney. This centre would teach children about both their cultural heritage and modern Australian society, providing a balanced perspective on Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures.

As Rick continued his work with the Gundungurra Aboriginal Centre and other community projects, his dedication to making a positive impact remained unwavering. His artwork, deeply rooted in his cultural heritage, became a source of hope and inspiration for others. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, particularly acknowledging how Wendy Middleton’s funding helped him get his art packaging. “I’ll never forget it for giving me that head start,” Rick said.

Rick’s art has become more than just a personal pursuit; it’s a means of connecting with the world and sharing his story. One of his most cherished pieces, titled Unity, symbolises harmony and unity within the community. Despite the high value of his original works, Rick created prints of his art to make it more accessible to a wider audience.

Rick’s journey in the art world began humbly, with exhibitions at Community Links, thanks to Anthony King’s support. From there, his art gained recognition and was showcased in various galleries, celebrated not only for its artistic quality but for its cultural significance.

In an expression of gratitude for all the support he has received, Rick gifted an artwork titled Bundjalung to Argyle Housing. The piece, which features geckos, holds deep personal meaning for Rick. “Geckos are partners in arms,” he explains, symbolising lifelong support and protection. This imagery reflects Rick’s own journey and the steadfast support he has received from Argyle Housing. Rick presented the artwork to his Client Support Specialist, Nicole, as a tribute to the organisation and to honour Wendy Middleton’s kindness and dedication.

The handover of Bundjalung was a deeply meaningful moment for Rick, reflecting both his gratitude and his ongoing commitment to the community. “This piece is a token of appreciation and a tribute to Wendy,” he said. The artwork now serves as a symbol of unity, support, and the enduring impact of Wendy’s legacy.

The piece was displayed in a prominent location within Argyle Housing’s space, ensuring that Wendy’s spirit continues to inspire. Nicole, receiving the artwork on behalf of Argyle Housing, expressed deep appreciation, emphasising the importance of preserving and celebrating the relationships that shape and strengthen the community.

Rick Khan’s story is one of overcoming adversity, staying true to his values, and using art to make a positive impact. His journey continues to inspire others, reflecting the resilience, creativity, and community spirit that define his life’s work.
